(A description written in 1891)

A Parish on the Bristol Channel, 7 miles east-by-south from Newport, 9 south-west from Chepstow, and about one mile east from Magor station on the South Wales section of the Great Western railway; in the Southern division of the county, lower division of the Hundred of Caldicot, Petty Sessional division of Newport. Union and County Court district of Chepstow; middle division of the rural deanery of Netherwent, archdeaconry of Monmouth and diocese of Llandaff.

The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and turret containing one bell; it was restored in 1880, at a cost of about £800, when a central tower of comparatively modern date was removed, and a bell-turret substituted; there is a 13th Century west window: the chancel arch and the doorway of the porch are Norman; on the south side of the chancel arch are traces of a hagioscope (squint); there are 84 sittings. The register of Baptisms and Burials dates from the year 1760; Marriages, 1813. The living is a vicarage, £192 yearly tithe rent-charge, gross yearly income £225, with 35.1/2 acres of glebe and Bounty Land and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Llandaff, and held since 1871 by the Rev. George David Sparks, who is also surrogate. Parish Clerk: Edgar Thomas.

There is a stone chapel for Wesleyans.

Schools:

National School (mixed), built in 1871, for 65 children; average attendance, 40; Miss Amelia Curry, mistress.

Post: Letters through Newport arrive at 9 .m. The nearest money order office is at Magor. Telegraph office at Portskewett. Wall letter box near church, cleared at 4.20 p.m.

Lord Tredegar and the Crown are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Henry Anthony Esq., Mrs Perry-Herrick, and Henry Price Esq. The soil is sandy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and hay. The area is 1,717 acres of land and 2,000 of water; rateable value, £4,608.
