St Maughans

(A description written in 1891)

A Parish on the river Monnow, which bounds the Parish on the east and separates Monmouthshire from Herefordshire; it is 5 miles north-north-west from Monmouth railway station; in the Northern division of the county, Hundred and Petty Sessional division of Skenfreth, Union and County Court district of Monmouth, Monmouth & Skenfreth Highway district; eastern division of Abergavenny rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.

The church of St. Maughan is a small but ancient building of stone in the Early English style, restored in 1866, at the expense of the late J.E.W. Rolls Esq. and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a small western tower containing one bell: there are 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1733, The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Llangattock-vibon-Avel with Llanfaenor, tithe rent-charge (St. Maughan) £108, joint yearly value £348, in the gift of John Allan Rolls Esq. and held since 1875 by the Rev. Alexander Maclaverty M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford,who resides at Llangattock-vibon-Avel. Parish Clerk: James Morgan.

The children of this parish attend the Llangattock-vibon-Avel National School.

Post: Letters through Monmouth, the nearest telegraph & money order office, arrive at 8 a.m. Rockfield is the nearest Post Office, from which letters are dispatched at 5.45 p.m.

Hillston Park is the seat of James Graham Esq. D.L., J.P; the mansion is of stone in the Italian style, very pleasantly situated in a woody park of nearly 500 acres.

The Duke of Beaufort K.G. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are James Graham Esq. D.L., J.P. and John Allan Rolls Esq. D.L., J.P. The soil is clayey; subsoil, marly clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans, The are is 1,277 acres; rateable value, £1,190.

The population in 1881 was 197.
