(A description written in 1891)

A Parish on the old road from Monmouth to Usk, 3 miles south from Dingestow station on the Coleford, Usk & Pontypool section of the Great Western railway and 6.3/4 south-west from Monmouth; in the Southern division of the county, Hundred of Raglan, Petty Sessional division of Trelleck, Union and County Court district of Monmouth; Raglan & Trelleck Highway district; eastern division of Usk rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.

The church of St. Goven is a structure of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a belfry containing 2 bells: there are 180 sittings. The register of Baptisms and Burials dates from the year 1749; Marriages, 1755. The living is a vicarage, with that of Pen-y-Clawydd annexed, £170 yearly tithe rent-charge, gross income £201, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Llandaff, and held since 1888 by the Rev.William Rees. Parish Clerk: William Blake.

£18, the produce of certain charities, is distributed yearly.

Court St. Lawrence is the seat of Mrs Earnshaw.

Post: Letters through Monmouth arrive at 10 a.m; dispatched at the same time. Raglan is the nearest money order & telegraph office. Llandenny Post Office is the nearest Letter box, which is cleared at 4 p.m.

The children attend the school at Pen-y-Clawdd

The Duke of Beaufort K.G. who is lord of the manor, Samuel Courthope Bosanquet Esq. M.A., D.L., J.P., Mrs Earnshaw and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 1.874 acres; rateable value £1,148.

The population in 1881 was 120.
