(A description written in 1891)
A Parish on the road from Clytha to Usk, 4 miles north from Usk and 2 from Nantyderry station on the Newport, Abergavenny & Hereford railway; in the Southern division of the county, Usk Hundred; Petty Sessional division, Union of Abergavenny, County Court district of Usk; south-western division of the rural deanery of Abergavenny, archdeaconry of Monmouth, diocese of Llandaff.
The church is an ancient building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, west porch and a western turret containing 2 bells, and there is a beautiful rood-loft; the church has been restored, and has 90 sittings. The register dates from the year 1734. The living a vicarage, yearly value £89 from tithe rent-charge, in the gift of the Dean & Chapter of Llandaff, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Adam Rowland; the Rev. Lewis Lewis L.D. of St David's College, Lampeter, who resides at Lancayo, Gwehelog, Usk, is curate in charge of this place and also of Trostrey. Parish Clerk: Thomas Jones
Post Office: James Williams, receiver. Letters are received through Usk, which is the nearest money order & telegraph office, arrive at 8. a.m; dispatched at 4.30 p.m.

Joint National School for the three parishes of Bettws-Newydd, Trostrey & Kemys Commander, built in 1872 for 60 children; average attendance, 26; William Hughes, master.
The Duke of Beaufort K.G. who is lord of the manor, and the Rev. Sir John Henry Fludyer Bart. M.A. rector of Ayston, Rutland, are the principal landowners. The soil is gravelly, subsoil, gravel and lime. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, turnips and mangolds. The area is 1,122 acres; rateable value, £894.
The population in 1881 was 109.
