(A description written in 1891)
A parish on the road from Newport to Chepstow, 5 miles east from Newport and 3 miles north of Llanwern station on the South Wales section of the Great Western railway; in the Southern division of the county, Hundred of Caldicot, Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district of Newport; western division of the rural deanery of Netherwent, archdeaconry of Monmouth, and diocese of Llandaff.
The church (name unknown) is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a bell-turret containing 2 bells: there are 140 sittings, 30 being free. The register of Baptisms and Burials dates from the year 1673; Marriages, 1755. The living is a rectory, £108 yearly tithe rent-charge, with 40 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Frederick Williams Esq. and held since 1836 by the Rev. Thomas Williams M.A. of Jesus College, Oxford. Parish Clerk: William Partridge.
LLANBEDR is a hamlet 1.1/2 miles north-east of this parish, an the road from Newport to Chepstow. There are some remains of a church here, now used as a barn.
Letters received through Newport and Caerleon arrive at 8 a.m. The nearest money order & telegraph office is at Caerleon; the nearest Post Office, Penhow.
The children of this parish attend schools at Llandevaud.
John Lawrence Esq. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. Langstone Court Farm is the old Manor House. The soil is partly light and loamy; subsoil, a portion in limestone. The area is 1,152 acres; rateable value, £1,417.
The population in 1881 was 174.
