Llanddewi Rydderch or Llanthewy Rytherch

(A description written in 1891)

A Parish 4 miles east from Abergavenny railway station; in the Northern division of the county, Hundred, Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district of Abergavenny; north-western division of Abergavenny rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.

The church of St. David is an ancient building of stone in the Gothic style, restored in 1864 and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower containing one bell: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1733. The living is a vicarage, £195 yearly tithe rent-charge, net income £200, with 12 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff, and held since 1876 by the Rev. Joseph Benbough, of Queen's College, Birmingham. Parish Clerk: Thomas Ash.

Schools:

British School, Mount Pleasant, erected in 1867, for 70 children; average attendance, 35; James Monk, master.

National School, for 80 children; average attendance, 42; Arthur William Forgham, master.

The Marquess of Abergavenny, who is lord of the manor, and William Herbert Esq. of Clytha, are the principal landowners. The soil is gravelly; subsoil, the same. The chief crops are wheat, oats and turnips. The area is 2,000 acres; rateable value, £2,528.

The population in 1881 was 353.
