Llangattock Lingoed

(A description written in 1891)

A Parish and small Village, 7 miles north-east from Abergavenny, 3 east from Llanvihangel station on the Newport, Abergavenny & Hereford section of the Great Western railway; in the Northern division of the county, Hundred, Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district of Abergavenny; north-western division of Abergavenny rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.

The church of St. Cadoc is an ancient building of stone, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells; there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1696. The living is a rectory, value £173 yearly tithe rent-charge, gross income £188, with residence and 16.1/2 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Owen Bowen Price B.D. of St. Davids. Sexton: Thomas Dew.

There are some quarries of very good stone, much used for building purposes.

Post Office: Joseph Davies, receiver. Letters through Abergavenny arrive at 9.15 a.m; dispatched at 2.45 p.m. Llanvihangel Crucorney is the nearest money Order & telegraph office. Postal orders are issued here, but not paid.

Schools:

National Endowed School (mixed), erected in 1848, for 73 children; average attendance, 40; & supported in part by an endowment bestowed in 1849 & amounting to £400; Edward Brindley, master.

The Marquess of Abergavenny, who is lord of the manna, and Reginald Vaughan Esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The soil is clay and sand; subsoil, heavy clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, apples, with much pasture land. The area is 1,927 acres; rateable value, £1,464.

The population in 1881 was 174.
