Llanishen

(A description written in 1891)

A Parish 3.1/2 miles north-east from Llandenny station on the Ross, Monmouth & Pontypool branch of the Great Western railway, and 8 south-south-west from Monmouth; in the Southern division of the county, Hundred of Raglan, Petty Sessional division of Trelleck, Union of Monmouth, County Court district of Usk; Raglan and Trelleck highway district, eastern division of Usk rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.

The church of St. Denis is a building of stone, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a tower with spire containing 1 bell: there are 140 sittings. The register dates from the year 1591. The living is a vicarage, with the perpetual curacy of Trelleck Grange annexed, yearly value £87, from land bought by Queen Anne's Bounty and £7 given by the Duke of Beaufort, gross income £167 with residence, in the gift of the Duke of Beaufort, who is lay rector, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Richard Ebezener Jones M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. Parish Clerk: John Morris Cobner.

There is here a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, erected in 1820.

Post Office: Mrs Elizabeth Cobner, receiver. Letters through Chepstow, arrive at 10 a.m. & dispatched at 4.30 p.m. The nearest money order & telegraph office is at Tintern.

A School Board of 7 members was formed in 1875 for the united district of Llanishen, Llanvihangel-Tor-y-Mynydd & Trelleck Grange;

Board School, built in 1877, at a cost of £800, for 80 children; average attendance, 36; Mrs Jane Hawkins, mistress.

The Duke of Beaufort, who is lord of the manor, and J. Bamford Esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,503 acres; rateable value, £1.040.

The population in 1881 was 248.
