Dingestow

(A description written in 1891)

A Parish on the road from Monmouth to Abergavenny, the river Trothy forming its eastern boundary, with a station on the Monmouth, Usk & Pontypool line of the Great Western railway, 148 miles from London, and 4 west-south-west from Monmouth; in the Southern division of the county and in the Raglan & Trelleck Highway district; Dingestow is in the Hundred and Petty Sessional division of Raglan; Union and County Court district of Monmouth; eastern division of the rural deanery of Abergavenny, Monmouth archdeaconry, Llandaff diocese.

The church of St Mary is an ancient building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transept, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 4 bells: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1755. The living is a vicarage, £106 yearly tithe rent-charge, net income £126 with 23 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Llandaff, and held since 1874 by the Rev. Albert Davies B.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Parish Clerk: Benjamin Gundy

There once was a castle here but only the moat can now be traced. Dingestow Court, a mansion in the Elizabethan and Pointed Gothic styles, is the seat of Samuel Courthope Bosanquet Esq. D.L., J.P.

Post Office:

John Wait, receiver. Letters are received through Monmouth at 8.45 a.m. & dispatched at 4.30 p.m. The nearest money order office is at Monmouth. There is a telegraph office at Dingestow railway station, by which telegrams can be forwarded or received. Monmouth is the nearest telegraph office for delivery.

Schools:

This place is included in the Dingestow & Tregare School Board district, and the children of this parish attend school there.

Railway Station:

John Arthur Thomas, station master.

The Duke of Beaufort K.G. who is lord of the manor, and Samuel Courthope Esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is stiff clay. The chief crops are wheat and beans. The area is 1,880 acres; rateable value, £1,544;

The population is 1881 was 240.
