Trellech Grange

(A description written in 1891)

A parish contiguous to Trellech, 6 miles north from Chepstow and 4 miles from Bigsweir station on the Wye Valley & Coleford line of the Great Western railway; in the Southern division of the county; Hundred of Raglan, Petty Sessional division Trellech, Union of Chepstow, County Court district of Monmouth, Raglan and Trellech highway district, eastern district of Usk rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.

The Church, once belonging to Tintern Abbey, is a small building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of nave and a belfry containing one bell: there are 70 sittings. The register dates from the year 1770. The living is a perpetual curacy united to the vicarage of Llanishen, joint gross yearly value £188, in the gift of the Duke of Beaufort, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Richard Ebenezer Jones M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge, who resides at Llanishen.

Post Office: Mrs Elizabeth Cobner, receiver. Letters arrive from Chepstow at 10.30 a.m. & are dispatched at 4.40. The nearest money order & telegraph office is at Tintern.

School:

This parish is included in the Llanishen United School Board district, formed in 1875; & the children of this parish attend the Board school there.

C.H. Crompton-Roberts, Esq, owns the whole of the parish. The soil is sandy; subsoil, sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 1,815 acres; rateable value, £1,059; the population in 1881 was 126.
